Fertility Monitors

Fertility Monitors -
What are Fertility Monitors and How do They Work?

The term Fertility Monitor refers to any method of monitoring when a woman will be most fertile, and consequently have the greatest chance of getting pregnant.

Fertiltity monitors ovulation tests

The ability to monitor fertility is vital for any couple trying to conceive; with this knowledge they can time sexual intercourse accordingly and increase the odds of getting pregnancy greatly.

For many years fertility monitors have been used such as ovulation charts or calculators. These methods are basically a best guess at the date based on the date of the last period and average cycle length.

While better than nothing, this method is not very exact and often incorrect. Today there is a cheap and effective way to monitor fertility - the ovulation test.

How do Fertility Monitor Ovulation Tests Work?

Our fertility monitor ovulation tests work by detecting Luteinizing Hormone (LH). LH is present in urine, and it's concentration is highest 24-48 hours before the release of the fertile egg. This is known as ovulation surge, and the ability to detect that allows you to monitor fertility very effectively.

Ovulation tests depend on antibodies - Y-shaped proteins that our immune system normally deploys in defense against invading viruses, bacteria or anything else foreign to the body.

Every antibody binds tightly and with high specificity only to certain foreign molecules, or antigens, and this specificity is what guides the immune defenses.

Ovulation tests contain special antibodies. When a urine sample is applied some of these antibodies will bind with the LH if present. These antibodies, along with unbound ones, flow up the test.

At the test region of the ovulation test, the bound antibodies bind with other antibodies that are immobilized on the test and form a colored line, showing a detection of LH.

The rest of the unbound antibodies continue to flow up the test, and bind at the control line in the same manner, forming another colored line. The control line serves to show that the antibodies flow up the test correctly and the ovulation test is working.

So How Do I Know When Ovulation Surge Is?

The first thing you must do is begin testing, based on your cycle period, a number of days before you expect to be ovulating.

When LH levels in your body reach a high enough level, the test will detect this and show a faint line. When LH surge occurs the line will be at it's most intense, and you will know ovulation surge has occured.

How Accurate Are Ovulation Tests?

Our ovulation tests are 99% accurate in laboratory tests, and have proven performance.

What can I do to Ensure the Test is Done Error Free?

  • Read the ovulation test instructions carefully.

  • Note how to apply the sample urine. With strip tests you must hold in sample a limited time so you don't apply too much.

  • Note when to read the test. Timing is important and results can be invalid before or after this time.

  • Do NOT use first morning urine - LH is synthesized during the day.

  • If the control line does not show, the test has been performed incorrectly. Try again with another test.
